BISHOPS LYDEARD VILLAGE HALL

NEWSLETTER JULY 2010

Car park  and extension

As the village has grown the need for car parking space has increased and, as the owner of the only car parks in the village, this has had a major impact on us. With Village Hall bookings increasing and the Children’s Centre soon to open this situation could only get worse.  To alleviate the problem a section of new car park is to be built on the left hand side of the Play Park (we have Planning Permission for 19 spaces but can only afford to build 5 spaces and access at the moment).
The Village Hall Car Park is intended primarily for users of the Village Hall and grounds, and we have special arrangements with Quantock Vale Surgery, Mount Street Garage and the new Children’s Centre. The car park by the public toilets, although owned by the Village Hall, is leased to the Parish Council for use as a public car park.

To reduce congestion, we have decided that the new car parking area will be used exclusively by Mount Street Garage as they will be able to get more than 5 cars on it. It will only be used during the hours that the garage is open and no vehicles will be left in the extension car park overnight, which will be locked overnight. This should free up spaces in the main car park during the day when the car park is most busy.

For safety reasons, we will be imposing a 5mph speed limit in the car park and restricting parking on the access road. There has been an increasing incidence of dangerous and damaging behaviour by riders of motor cycles, scooters and mopeds, and therefore we will also be banning scooters and motorcycles from the car park except for those riders attending events at the hall.

Bishops Lydeard Children's Centre

You will no doubt have noticed the ongoing work being carried out to the new Childrens Centre adjacent to the Village Hall.  The building is very close to completion and in fact the centre is already beginning to run services from the new building

The staff are putting together a programme of activities to help meet the needs of the community and are only too happy to discuss what the centre can provide. Please feel free to call into the centre to see the building and meet the staff.  The centre will have an official opening later in the year and the staff will keep you updated with events being arranged.

Open Garden at Lydeard House

On the afternoons of 19th and 20th July, an Open Garden Plus event was held at Lydeard House, in aid of the Village Hall Improvement Fund.

The weather was very kind, and the gardens beautiful. So many thanks go to all who supported this event; the performers, contributors, exhibitors, helpers and visitors. We are especially grateful to Vaun Wilkins for allowing us to use her lovely gardens, without who’s hard work and enthusiastic support, this event would not have been the success it was.

Fete and Party in the Park

The Bishops Lydeard Fete will be held this year on 4th September between 2-6pm.  We’re trying to make the Fete a bigger event this year and have already secured the attendance of a police dog demonstration, fire engine, police traffic car, climbing wall, kids art tent, face painting, sponge stocks, human fruit machine, duck racing and street dance, basketball demonstration and loads more.  Afterwards, starting at 7pm will be the Party in the Park.  Back by popular demand, the event will feature two bands with local favourites Area 52 headlining, with other acts too.  The Gazebo competition will make a return too.  The evening event will be ticket only (Adults £3, children £2) and we can’t guarantee that we won’t have sold them all beforehand so get them now from the Co-op, Bird in Hand, the school office or call Mike on 01823 430852.

 Flower Show

The Flower Show will also be held on 4th September in the Village Hall – doors open to the public at 2.30pm – entry forms and rules are available in local shops.

During the afternoon there will also be a display of old photographs of Bishops Lydeard in the New Small Hall.  Come along and see how the village has changed over the years.

 Village Hall and Grounds

As a result of gifts of land over time, the Village Hall Charity owns the whole area covering the Village Hall itself plus the Play Park, green and car park. However, as these areas are privately owned by the charity we do not get the automatic financial assistance or help that council owned property does.  The Village Hall Charity is not only responsible for decisions regarding the Village Hall and grounds but also for the maintenance of them.

The Parish Council generously pays for the grass to be cut and normally gives a grant towards the upkeep of the Play Park which has to be insured, inspected and maintained. Any costs beyond the Parish Council grant have to come from Village Hall funds since the Play Park provides no income. We aim to complete the upgrading of the Play Park later this year (subject to grants), but the area suffers from a continuous amount of low level damage and littering, and we are asking for volunteers to help run the area and deter damage.

We also need some extra help in running the hall itself.  If you have some ideas regarding the Village Hall and grounds please get in touch with us and consider joining the committee to help implement them.  If you want to help but would rather not join the committee, could you give us some of your time for the many tasks that need to be done.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US

The Village Hall Committee’s aim is to enhance and improve the Village Hall  thus making it a more user friendly and versatile facility for the village.

This aim started with the resurfacing of the car park and continues with the new Small Hall and the replacement of Play Park equipment as described above. The Village Hall Management Committee is now looking for grants for the next phase of development which will be an extension of the Mount St. end of the Large Hall to accommodate a permanent stage.

The Village Hall Management Committee would welcome new members who would like to help in the running of this important village facility. Why not come along to our AGM (date to be advised) to find out more and to give us suggestions on events or activities you would like to see provided.

As the hall development programme continues so the workload involved in keeping it running increases. There are many tasks involved in running the Village Hall, such as -:

·     Maintenance of the hall and grounds.

·      Fund raising planning and helping at events

· Improvement planning and applying for grants

The more people we have involved in the running of the Hall the smaller the workload for the individual, so if you feel you would like to help and have some time to spare please contact  either Richard Peacocke  (01823 432740), Greg Allen (01823 430421) or Alan Ball (01823 433983).
