History of the Village Hall

The earliest record we have of the area where the Village Hall now stands is when it was a Working Mens Institute in 1907 (see picture below). The road now known as Mount Street was originally known as Frog Street as can be seen in the second picture also taken in 1907. This also includes the house known as Maynards which is still part of the village hall complex and owned and maintained by the Village Hall Management Committee.

The first use of the Village Hall( according to local legend) was when it was used for evacuees in the war. They came on the train and then taken to the Hall where local people gathered to offer homes to them.
Additions have been made to the Hall, the first being the flat roofed buildings on the back of the small hall.  These were originally built as garages but have been modified and now form storage areas for the Halls.  The next part of the development was the addition of the new entrance lobby and toilets. These were added to the car park side of the Halls in 1992.

Do you have any old photos of the Hall, information or any stories regarding it.  If so please contact us.  We would love to include them on this site
